The rightwing populist Northern
league will not take part in the final House vote on
constitutional reforms, House Whip Massimiliano Fedriga said
Tuesday. "We won't be accomplices to (Premier Matteo) Renzi and
his government that is using this text, which is
unconstitutional, to preen on the political stage," he said. The
reform, currently in its sixth and final reading in the House,
will abolish the Senate in its present form to make lawmaking
faster, easier and cheaper. There will be an October referendum
on the reform - a referendum on which Renzi has staked his
political future.
