Italy is a country of elderly
people, the national statistics agency ISTAT said in a report
out Thursday.
At the end of 2014 there were 157.7 elderly people to every
100 youngsters, according to the 2016 edition of ISTAT's annual
'Noi Italia' report.
Further, there were 55.1 people of non-working age to every
100 people of working age.
Both values have been increasing constantly in recent
years, the agency said.
However estimated life expectancy fell slightly in 2015 for
the first time in ten years.
Life expectancy for women stood at 84.7% and for men at
80.1%, ISTAT said.
Life expectancy in southern regions remained below the
national average.
In 2014 the number of marriages remained stable or dropped
throughout Italy with the exception of the Dolomite region of
Trentino Alto Adige, making it one of EU countries where people
wed least.
In the same year there were 8.6 divorces per 10,000
inhabitants, putting Italy third from bottom after Ireland and
Malta according to their 2013 figures.
In 2014 the birth rate stood at 1.37 per woman, well below
the 2.1 children needed to guarantee generational turnover.
