ISTAT national statistics bureau
said in a report out Thursday that 25.7% of citizens aged 15-29
were neither studying nor working in 2015. This translates into
over 2.3 million people. The figure was down from 26.5% the
previous year in what was the first drop since the start of the
economic crisis, ISTAT added. The percentage was higher among
women (27.1%) and in the South, with levels in the Calabria and
Sicily regions reaching 40%. As well, ISTAT said 25.3% of
citizens aged 30-34 held a university degree in 2015, up from
23.9% the previous year. This was just under the Italian
objective of 26% but well below the European target of 40%, the
agency added.
