European Union border agency Frontex said in a report on Wednesday that there is a threat of terrorists mingling among asylum seekers to enter Europe. "The Paris attacks in November 2015 clearly demonstrated that irregular migratory flows could be used by terrorists to enter the EU," Frontex said in its risk analysis report for 2016. "Two of the terrorists involved in the attacks had previously irregularly entered through Leros and had been registered by the Greek authorities. They presented fraudulent Syrian documents to speed up their registration process".
Frontex said an estimated one million migrants arrived in Europe last year, accounting for the record number of 1.82 million detections of illegal border crossings reported by EU Member States. It said that was was more than six times the previous record set in 2014". The report highlighted that Italy and Greece have been hit particularly hard by the crisis, while noting that it is no longer just an problem for those countries.
