OECD Secretary General Angel
Gurria said Tuesday that Premier Matteo Renzi's government was
the first Italian executive that he has encountered to show a
real desire to implement reforms.
He also reiterated his praise of the government's Jobs Act
labour reform, saying it was starting to bear fruit.
"I always tried to convince Italy on reforms - I tried with
(ex premiers Romano) Prodi, (Silvio) Berlusconi, (Mario) Monti
and (Enrico) Letta," he said.
"The first time I encountered the political will was with
Matteo Renzi.
"Maybe it's because he took away my (former) chief
economist," he added, referring to Italian Economy Minister Pier
Carlo Padoan.
He called for patience in assessing the Jobs Act, which,
among other things, watered down the law against unfair
dismissal for newly hired workers in a bid to encourage firms to
take people on.
"Italy only passed the Jobs Act last year and now it is
starting to react positively. The reforms work".
