The government and most of
Italy's trade unions reached an agreement overnight to reduce
the number of sectors that the civil service is split into from
11 to four, the unions said on Tuesday. The aim is to contribute
to simplifying Italy's civil service. Under the new system,
which will be introduced gradually, the civil service will be
split into the following segments: central functions, local
functions, health, and education and research. The current
sectors of ministries, tax agencies and non-economic public
bodies will be rolled into central functions as part of the
deal, signed for the government by ARAN, the agency that
represents it in negotiations on the public sector. The sectors
of school, research, university and AFAM (art, music and dance
training) will be incorporated into the last of the four new
segments. The premier's department, meanwhile, will maintain its
autonomy.
