Northern League Secretary Matteo
Salvini on Tuesday renewed his call for centre-right primaries
in Rome to choose a mayoral candidate for municipal elections in
June.
"Are primaries needed in Rome? Absolutely yes, when
politics fails to do it let's allow the people to decide," said
Salvini in reference to disagreement over the current official
centre-right candidate Guido Bertolaso, chosen by ex-premier and
Forza Italia leader Silvio Berlusconi, who came fourth in an
unofficial primary organised by the Northern League in Rome over
the weekend.
"If the centre right wants to win it needs to run united,
it's very simple. It is always a good thing to listen to the
people, everywhere from north to south, if someone is afraid of
facing the people it means he or she was wrong to enter
politics," Salvini said.
The other candidates in the running include Rome
entrepreneur and former city councillor Alfio Marchini, winner
of the unofficial primaries, on a civic list, and former Lazio
regional governor Francesco Storace for La Destra (The Right).
