Lombardy Governor Roberto Maroni
said Tuesday that he intends to stand for re-election in 2018
after the regional assembly rejected a no-confidence filed after
a close aide was hit by a corruption scandal. "Not only am I not
resigning, but today I have decided to stand again in 2018 to
enable the centre right to win again," he said, adding that his
ruling majority in the region was solid. Maroni has come under
fire since the arrest in February of regional councillor Fabio
Rizzi, his colleague in the Northern League. Rizzi and his
live-in girlfriend Lorena Lidia Pagani are under investigation
over alleged corruption in the outsourcing of hospital dentistry
services in the northern region.
