Justice Minister Andrea Orlando on
Tuesday urged Interior Minister Angelino Alfano to "lower your
banners" in a campaign against surrogate motherhood and
stepchild adoption for gay couples. He said that Alfano's
proposed sanctions against surrogate motherhood were
"reasonable" but that Italy needed a law on adoptions, "that
puts us on the side of the child". Alfano's New Centre Right
(NCD), the junior government partner of Orlando's Democratic
Party (PD), is already fighting against a proposed new PD bill,
which has yet to be tabled, on adoptions for couples in civil
unions, including same-sex ones.
