Northern League leader Matteo
Salvini has been irked at apparently not being consulted by
centre-right allies over the possible candidacy of TV presenter
Rita Dalla Chiesa for Rome mayor, sources said Wednesday.
Salvini has therefore decided not to take part in talks
called by former premier Silvio Berlusconi on the candidacy,
they said.
They said Salvini was not against Dalla Chiesa per se but
against the way she was chosen by Forza Italia chief Berlusconi
and rightist ally Giorgio Meloni of the small Fratelli d'Italia
party.
Dalla Chiesa, 68, is the daughter of Carlo Alberto Dalla
Chiesa, a Carabinieri general who successfully fought the Red
Brigades before being assassinated by Cosa Nostra after being
named Palermo's new anti-mafia prefect in 1982.
Elections will take place mid-June to pick the successor to
Ignazio Marino, torpedoed by his own Democratic Party after an
expenses scandal last year.
