Businessman Alfio Marchini will
not be the centre right's candidate in Rome mayoral elections in
June, Northern league leader Matteo Salvini said Monday. He said
Marchini had been "vetoed" by the leader of the small rightwing
Fratelli d'Italia (FdI) party, Giorgia Meloni. Salvini, former
premier and Forza Italia leader Silvio Berlusconi and Meloni met
Monday to discuss the touted candidacy of Marchini, an
independent who made an unsuccessful run for mayor in 2013 and
is now heading up another civic ticket to replace former
Democratic Party (PD) mayor Ignazio Marino, forced out by the PD
over an expenses scandal last year.
