Italy cannot at the same time
sell anti-personnel mines to other countries and then pay NGOs
to clear mines, the secretary-general of the Italian Bishops'
Conference (CEI), Cardinal Nunzio Galantino, said Tuesday. CEI
No.2 Galantino recalled that Italy is among the world's leading
exporters of arms. "These contradictions must be highlighted,"
he said. Italy is the world's ninth-biggest exporter of arms,
according to the Stockholm International Peace Research
Institute.
