Premier Matteo Renzi said Tuesday that budget safeguard clauses that trigger automatic tax rises if the public finances do not hit set targets will not kick in.
"The safeguard clauses will not be triggered," Renzi told Il Sole 24 Ore when asked about his government's plans for the 2015 budget law. He added that the executive was aiming to lower taxes in Italy, which is widely considered to be too high. "In 2016 we'll wager on another reduction in the tax burden," the premier said. The leader of the centre-left Democratic Party (PD) also ruled out any changes to the new election system his government pushed through earlier this year, amid staunch resistance from opposition parties and a minority within his own party. "There's no chance," Renzi said when asked about the prospect of the law, the so-called Italicum, being amended.
