Premier Matteo Renzi said Thursday that he was hopeful of being able to pass a pension changes in the autumn to give people more flexibility in choosing when they retire. Renzi's government has mooted changing a pension reform named after former labour minister Elsa Fornero, which raised the retirement age, in order to make taking early retirement easier but with a lower pension. "I'm optimistic that we'll be able to give some more flexibility to the Fornero when we are drafting the (2016) budget law, therefore October, November," Renzi said.
Renzi added that his government's hotly contested Good School bill was open to be being debated on and improved. The bill has moved to the Senate after being approved by the Lower House on Wednesday. "You can always discuss and improve, but the important thing is that this country has got going again," Renzi said on the fringes of a meeting of his centre-left Democratic Party. "You have to do things. Laws get approved and then there are debates and different opinions, naturally. But I'm optimistic".
