Former Democratic Party (PD) chief
Pier Luigi Bersani said Tuesday he won't participate in a
confidence vote on the government's 'Italicum' electoral reform
bill.
"I participated in 17 government confidence votes, more
than one a month," Bersani wrote on Facebook.
"I am ready to vote 17 more times on government measures
regarding government. But a government can't call a confidence
vote on democracy".
The first of three confidence votes in the Lower House on
the controversial bill is scheduled for Wednesday with the other
two to be held on Thursday.
Bersani and other dissident PD lawmakers have staged
staunch opposition to aspects of the bill, which they argue
unfairly tips the balance of power away from parliament in favor
of the executive.
