Italian Police Chief Alessandro
Pansa said Wednesday that Italy is facing "a more pronounced"
risk of terrorist attacks than previously.
He told a Lower House hearing that Italy "is more exposed
than in the past" to international terrorism because "theatres
of war are much closer to us" and terror links and connections
are more complex.
Concerns have been raised about Islamic State (ISIS)
terrorists moving into civil war-torn Libya, which is separated
from Italy by only a narrow strip of Mediterranean Sea.
Contributing to the heightened risk is the fact that "a
good part" of the more than 3,000 European foreign fighters who
went to war in Syria and Iraq have returned to Europe, said
Pansa.
That includes at Italians and people from Italy with dual
citizenship.
The return of foreign fighters to their home countries has
been a rising security concern for many Western nations.
