Premier Matteo Renzi said Friday that his government will "toughen" Italy's laws on corruption.
The government is increasing the minimum sentence to six years from the current four years; and the maximum to 10 years from the current eight years.
He said new rules will be established for restitution of stolen goods.
The announcement, which Renzi had discussed earlier the week, follows a major mafia probe in the Italian capital city of Rome. Renzi said it was time to "change the rules of the game".
He also urged judicial officials to act quickly on their probe of alleged mafia involvement reaching into high levels of the Rome city administration.
Following a meeting of his cabinet, the premier said that his Democratic Party wanted to see "every corner" of the country cleaned of corruption.
