Mogherini 'wd rewrite Russia chapter'

Moscow 'no longer a strategic partner'

(ANSA) - Brussels, September 2 - Incoming EU foreign affairs chief Federica Mogherini told the European Parliament's foreign affairs committee Tuesday that in light of current events she would rewrite the first chapter of Italy's programme for its EU duty presidency calling to strengthen the strategic partnership with Russia.
Moscow is "still an important political actor in regional challenges, it is undeniable, but is no longer a strategic partner for the EU," said Italian Foreign Minister Mogherini of a chapter framed ahead of the July 1 start of the presidency, which has been criticised by many MEPs.
"But I hope (Russia) changes in future and wants to become a partner of ours again," added the Italian FM, who will take up her new post on November 1.
The EU is readying the latest in a series of sanctions against Russia for its rising intervention in Ukraine.
