Economy Minister Pier Carlo
Padoan says the government is "ready to save on everything" in
its drive to improve efficiency in the Italian public
administration and boost the economy.
In an interview published Wednesday in the Corriere della
Sera, Padoan also cautioned that the decisions on cutting as
well as on spending are "highly political" and must ultimately
be the responsibility of elected officials.
"It comes to identifying priorities in a period of limited
resources," he said.
"It is a political operation".
Spending Review Commissioner Carlo Cottarelli has
identified numerous areas for cutting and saving, but has
reportedly clashed with Premier Matteo Renzi over priorities.
Padoan denied those reports, saying that dealings between
Cottarelli and Renzi have been "excellent".
