(see related) An assembly of MPs
from the anti-establishment 5-Star Movement (M5S) decided
Monday to take to the streets in protest against a government
Constitutional reform bill that would revamp the Senate,
drastically cutting its members and turning it into an assembly
of regional officials with limited lawmaking powers.
The idea of "taking parliament to the streets" was
advanced by their leader, firebrand comedian-turned-politician
Beppe Grillo during a meeting in the nation's capital. The
rank-and-file will now decide whether the protest will be for a
day or a week, M5S sources said.
"We are at war, but ours is a democratic guerrilla war,"
Grillo had said earlier on Monday, promising "no shock actions
or mass resignations".
His remarks came after some 100 mostly M5S Senators walked
off the Senate floor last Thursday in protest after the
government decided to limit speaking time in an effort to get
through a barrage of 7,800 amendments filed by opponents of its
reform bill.
