Rome horse-drawn carriage
operators risk trial for mistreating their animals, judicial
sources said Thursday. A dozen or so owners of the famed
'botticelle' are suspected of housing their horses in narrow and
unsuitable conditions, the sources said. Animal rights activists
have for years complained about the botticelle because of the
alleged suffering they cause animals on the Italian capital's
rough cobbled streets.
