Alcohol consumption in Italy is
down but binge-drinking is up, national statistics agency ISTAT
said Wednesday.
The percentage of the over-11 population drinking alcohol on
a daily basis fell to 21.4% in 2016 from 22.2% in 2015 and 29.5%
in 2006, it said.
But the percentage of occasional drinkers rose from 38.8% in
2006 to 43.3% in 2016, as did the percentage of those who drink
outside meal time, from 26.1% 10 years ago to 29.2% now.
The ISTAT report highlighted that binge drinking had
"steadily" risen at bars, pubs, discos, concerts and sporting
events.
