Global production of fake
parmesan and grana padano cheeses outstripped that of the
genuine products for the first time ever last year, Italian
farmers' association Coldiretti said Thursday.
In 2014 production of imitation parmesan and grana exceeded
300 million kg, compared to 295 million kg of the real 'Made in
Italy' kind.
This pushed down the export value of genuine parmesan and
grana, while the value of exports of other typical Italian
cheeses such as pecorino and gorgonzola rose.
Much of the fake parmesan and grana is produced in the
United States, but also in Russia, Brazil, Argentina and
Australia.
Coldiretti also slammed the arrival on the European and
Italian markets of poor-quality grana imitations with deceptive
names produced mainly in the Cech Republic, Hungary, Poland,
Estonia and Latvia.
