Visitors to Milan Expo 2015 will be able to witness first-hand the production of one of Italy's most poplar cheeses, the Consortium for the Protection of Grana Padano said Thursday.
The protected designation of origin (PDP) semifat hard cheese will be made in a purpose-built dairy inside the Cascina Triluza, an old rural contruction and the only pre-existing building on the exhibition site that will also host the Civil Society pavilion. There, visitors can follow the production process of Grana Padano in real time throughout the six months of the Universal Exhibition. "For us it is a return to the origins of the history of our product in its natural place of production, namely a Lombardy farmhouse," said consortium president Nicola Cesare Baldrighi. The aim, he continued, "is to show an international public how our cheese is produced on the ground, by offering the direct experience of two or four workings a day", but also "to transmit a message concerning the significance and importance of the protected designation of origin, a concept that has deep roots in Italy but which is absolutely unheard of outside the European community". In addition to the Cascina Triulzi, the Grana Padano brand will also be present at Expo at the entrance to Eataly, in the three themed restaurants dedicated to Lombardy, Veneto and Piedmont - the cheese's main regions of production - in the Cibus è Italia food enterprises pavilion and in the Italy Pavilion. Milan Expo 2015 opens on May 1 under the theme 'Feeding the planet, energy for life'. It is expected to draw millions of visitors from across Italy and around the world.
