Matteo Garrone said Sunday too many
mistakes had scotched the chances of his migrant drama Io
Capitano winning the best foreign film Oscar a week ago.
"It was possible to win at the Oscars. Unfortunately the
campaign didn't go the way it was supposed to, we didn't have
the right American distributor who invested what needed to be
invested and then, above all, nobody told us that we could run
in all categories.
"That makes all the difference because it is a race where not
everyone starts on an equal footing.
"If you run for all categories you have all ten thousand of the
Academy as voters, while for the Best Foreign Film category
there are only a thousand people voting".
The Oscar went to Jonathan Glazer's Auschwitz drama The Zone of
Interest.
