Italian director Lina Wertmuller
may be chosen to receive this year's Governors' Award for career
achievement from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Science,
The Hollywood Reporter said Monday.
Wertmuller, 88, the first woman director nominated for an
academy award for Seven Beauties in 1975 and also known for The
Seduction of Mimi, Love and Anarchy and Swept Away, is one of
the favourites to be selected by the 54-strong board of
governors Tuesday.
She has already received the public backing of Sophia Loren,
Harvey Weinstein, Vanessa Redgrave, Helen Mirren and Taylor
Hackford.
James Ivory of The Remains of the Day and Howard's End fame
is reported to be among Wertmuller's rivals.
Other frontrunners include Peter Bogdanovich, Richard Lester
and Terrence Malick.
The awards, which will be presented at the 8th annual
Governors Awards ceremony on November 12, will be announced
publicly once the Academy notifies the honorees.
The governors' awards look to reward meritorious Oscar-less
members of the film industry.
