Pompeii museum curators have
restored the furnishings of a kitchen located in a public
laundry in ancient Pompeii in a bid to show what it looked like
before Vesuvius erupted in 79 AD.
The so-called Fullonica of Stephanus was first excavated in
1912 and the kitchen furnishing were identified through an
inventory from the original dig, which documents what was found
where.
The Fullonica had great masonry vats with running water for
rinsing, stone basins for dyeing, washing, and removing stains,
and a press to make dried fabrics shine.
