A portrait of Italian poet Dante
Alighieri by Florentine mannerist painter Agnolo Bronzino went
on display at Florence's Uffizi gallery on Tuesday, in the year
that marks the 750th anniversary of Dante's birth.
Bronzino painted "The Allegorical Portrait of Dante" in
1532-1533. It was commissioned by merchant banker Bartolomeo
Bettini as one of three paintings of Italian literary figures
that also included portraits of Petrarca and Boccaccio.
"It seemed important to me that in 2015, when we are
celebrating 750 years since the birth of Alighieri, that also
the Uffizi was among the places that pay tribute to the poet's
memory," said Uffizi Director Antonio Natali.
