Israel is at Expo because it
"knows how to steal water from the desert" and also because "the
theme of food also expresses a message of peace," said Israel's
Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Tzipi Hotovely, during her
visit to Expo on the occasion of Israel's National Day at the
world's fair.
"We're here as a function of our capacity for innovation in
irrigation systems," she said.
"Let's not forget that Israel is two-thirds desert. That's
why our first prime minister established the priority of using
irrigation technology to have a fertile country, able to give
food and water to all. I believe this is the first contribution
that Israel can give to the world, when it comes to agriculture.
Countries like India, like those in Africa, like Brazil, have
learned our technologies," Hotovely said.
"The theme of food expresses a message of peace," she
added.
"My first message is this: to understand how the more
developed countries can work together and how technologies can
contribute to a better distribution of resources. It's true that
today in the world there are countries that don't have enough
food and countries that have too much. We need to rebalance this
situation," Hotovely said.
