The University for Foreigners of
Siena announced Saturday that it will suspend lessons on April
10 for the Eid-al-Fitr holiday marking the end of Ramadan, the
Muslim month of fasting.
Dean Tommaso Montanari explained in the formal decree that the
suspension is intended to be a "visible sign of solidarity with
the Palestinian population of Gaza, a large part of which is
Muslim, subjected to an incessant, unprecedented massacre".
The university also intends to suspend teaching on October 11
for Yom Kippur, the Jewish Day of Repentance, which falls almost
"one year after the 7 October massacre" by Hamas against Israel
that sparked the war in Gaza.
"Our statutory mission is to build multiculturalism and to
contribute to peaceful coexistence between peoples," said
Montanari in the decree.
