Environmental duties are needed to
protect European businesses from unfair competition from
companies operating in countries that do not have the same
environmental standards, Business and Made in Italy Minister
Adolfo Urso said on Tuesday.
"It can be done," said Urso during a conference on the European
energy market in Rome.
"It must be done, including through regulations on imports and
exports, the ones that are rightly called 'environmental
duties'," he added.
The minister said "an assertive and supportive policy" is needed
to protect European companies "that have production processes
that are more difficult to decarbonize and greater exposure to
competition from countries that do not have constraints imposed
by environmental and social standards".
