Foreign Minister Luigi Di Maio said
Wednesday Russia made a "whopping mistake" in betting on
divisions among NATO members over the Ukraine war.
"If Moscow's thinking was that the Allies Countries, Europe and
more generally the community of democracies would abandon
Ukraine to its fate, we can say that this thinking proved to be
resoundingly mistaken", he said at a conference of the De
Gasperi Foundation at the foreign press club.
Speaking at the Estates-General on Europe earlier, Di Maio said
the reaction to the war would lend "fresh impetus" to the
European Union.
But he said that the unanimity rule was "blocking" Europe and
its decision-making mechanisms had to be changed.
