President Sergio Mattarella on Friday
urged action against poverty ahead of the UN's World Food Day on
Saturday, saying the COVID pandemic had dramatically increased
poverty worldwide.
"World Food Day offers a precious opportunity for reflection on
the dramatic consequences of the pandemic, marked by an increase
in levels of poverty and malnutrition," he said.
"The state of food security in the world has been markedly
worsened.
"The international community will have to properly followup the
recommendations of the recent summit on food systems, valorising
the natural synergies of the UN system and the competences of
the United Nations agencies located in Rome".
Three UN food organisations, the Food and Agriculture
Organization (FAO), the World Food Programme (WFP), and the
International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), are
located in Rome.
