Leonardo Cazzaniga, a doctor arrested for a string of deaths in Saronno hospital, on Friday rejected charges of murder in a hearing with a preliminary investigations judge. Carabinieri police on Thursday seized over 50 medical records in relation to a probe into Cazzaniga, who is suspected of causing the deaths of four elderly patients at Saronno hospital, in the northern province of Varese, and a nurse who was allegedly his lover.
The nurse, Laura Taroni, is also suspected of killing her husband using drugs recommended by Cazzaniga.
Investigation documents suggest that the couple thought about killing one of the woman's relatives too, sources said.
Investigators in Busto Arsizio, just northwest of Milan, said Wednesday that there may be more victims than previously thought. Investigators are also looking into the death of Cazzaniga's father, who died in the Saronno hospital ER while Cazzaniga, 60, was on duty, and the death of Taroni's mother, with whom they said Taroni had a bad relationship. A total of 14 people are under investigation over the suspicious deaths - four of them at Saronno hospital.
