Brand-new earthquake
reconstruction commissioner Vasco Errani said in the stricken
mountain village of Amatrice on Thursday that his priority is to
preserve local identity. This means restoring the local economy,
trade, social relations, and schools, he said after his first
meeting with Amatrice Mayor Sergio Pirozzi. "Our priority is
local identity while guaranteeing full assistance to citizens,"
the former Emilia Romagna governor said in the village that was
largely flattened by a 6.2-magnitude quake on August 24. "We got
to work," Errani said. "We're meeting again on Saturday".
Cabinet this morning officially named Errani special government
commissioner for reconstruction in central Italy, where last
week's deadly quake razed entire villages across four regions
and killed at least 293 people, most of them in Amatrice. Errani
reports directly to Premier Matteo Renzi and will coordinate
between central government, regional governors, and mayors in
conjunction with the National Anti-Corruption Authority (ANAC).
