The Holy Shroud of
Arquata was recovered Thursday from the quake-damaged church of
St Francis in the Marche village of Arquata del Tronto amid
fears the church would collapse. The venerated cloth, an
impression of the Holy Shroud of Turin made in the 17th century,
was recovered in what police and fire services called a
"complicated" operation. Arquata was one of three villages badly
damaged in the August 24 earthquake that killed 293 people in
all, 50 of them in Arquata, 11 at Accumoli and 232 at Amatrice.
