An Italian citizen has died in a
car accident in the Salar de Uyuni salt flat in southwestern
Bolivia, the Italian Foreign Ministry said on Monday.
Padua local paper Il Gazzettino reported that the Italian
victim is Chiara Gemmo, a 26-year-old researcher from Montagnana
near Padua.
Local Bolivian media reported that she died along with four
other tourists, three Belgians and one Peruvian, when the
vehicle they were travelling in overturned, possibly due to a
burst tyre or excessive speed.
Two other Peruvians and a Bolivian were injured in the
accident on Saturday, local media reported.
The salt flat is the biggest salt desert in the world, and
one of the major tourist draws in Bolivia.
