A judge in the Sicilian city of
Messina on Thursday sentenced a man who had run over and killed
a 14-year-old girl while intoxicated to four years in prison.
Luca Lo Miglio, 31, was driving a rented BMW while drunk
when he ran into and killed the girl, Rebecca Lazzarini, in the
village of Milli Marina on March 8.
She had been walking along the side of the road with her
father and her younger brother.
Italy's new vehicular homicide law, passed in March, sets
prison terms of 2-7 years for drivers who wrongfully kill one
person, of up to 12 years for killing one person while drunk,
and up to 18 years if there are multiple victims. Licenses can
be confiscated for a term ranging from five to 30 years.
