A Carabinieri police
officer shot dead an immigrant who stabbed him at a tent camp in
the southern Italian town of San Ferdinando, ANSA sources said
on Wednesday. The officer had intervened with a colleague to
break up a fight between two non-EU migrants at the camp, which
in winter hosts thousands of seasonal workers engaged in orange
picking in Calabria. One of the two migrants pulled out a knife
and injured the officer, prompting the officer to shoot, sources
said. The Carabiniere was initially said to have sustained at
least three stab wounds, to an eye and an arm, but later reports
said he had only needed five stitches to a facial wound.
The dead migrant was said to have come from Mali. The initial
fight reportedly started after an attempt to steal from the
migrant who then turned on police.
