Police on Monday arrested a man,
23, for the hit-and-run killing of a 20-year-old woman who was
crossing the street in the Naples-area town of Casoria.
The driver fled the scene of the accident and abandoned his
car, which was found with a broken and bloodied windshield.
The victim was with a female friend, who was slightly
injured in the collision.
Italy in March passed a new vehicular homicide law, setting
prison terms of 2-7 years for drivers who wrongfully
kill one person, and up to 18 years if there are multiple
victims. The term for killing one person while drunk is 12
years. Licenses can be confiscated for a term ranging from five
to 30 years.
