The Italian Coast Guard said
Monday that on Thursday, May 26, there was just one migrant-boat
wreck and that around 300 people are missing, after talking to
some 150 survivors. There had been talk of a second wreck on
that day. The number of bodies recovered from that single wreck
is still unspecified, because they were transferred to various
vessels. Coast Guard investigators ascertained that two boats
set off from Libya, one towing the other and each carrying about
450 people. On the way, the migrant smugglers cut the tow rope,
and a woman died during this operation. Around 450 people on the
boat that was farther from the Libyan coast were rescued, while
the second boat capsized: 150 people were taken on board rescue
vessels, which also recovered some bodies, while the other 300
or so drowned.
