Florence Mayor Dario Nardella on
Thursday vowed to repair a huge sinkhole that appeared on the
Lungarno near Ponte Vecchio Wednesday by November 4, the 50th
anniversary of a catastrophic flood in the Tuscan capital. He
said the emergency work should be completed by the end of
September. An ordinance setting up a technical committee to
oversee repair work will be signed later today, Nardella said.
The 200-metre-long hole opened up early Wednesday, spurring
tourists to flock to the street bordering the Arno, snapping
selfies. The sinkhole, which was blamed on a burst water pipe,
caused huge damage but no one was hurt.
