A rescued nine-month-old girl
lost her mother at sea, asylum seekers told cultural mediators
on the Sicilian island of Lampedusa on Wednesday. They said the
mother and child were among 150 asylum seekers who took to the
Mediterranean in a rubber dinghy and were subsequently rescued.
The mother died during the crossing, they said. The infant is
currently staying at the island's hotspot for asylum seeker
identification and processing.
