Three high-school students who were suspended after posting selfies with a classmate in the midst of an epileptic seizure are to be probed by city prosecutors, sources said Friday.
The three 15-year-olds were suspended for three days after taking pictures in which they openly derided their fellow student as she was having a fit in the school bathrooms, and sent them to the entire class on WhatsApp.
From there, the pictures soon surfaced on social media.
The juvenile prosecutor's office has opened a probe into the incident, which means the three will likely face judicial proceedings.
"The outcome of the trial is the last of our concerns in these cases, in which suspension from school cannot be the sole response," said prosecutor Anna Maria Baldelli. "Our main concern is...helping the victim overcome the incident and at the same time, helping (the perpetrators) become aware of what they have done". This goes for the three students and for the rest of the class who acted as spectators and posted the pictures on social media, she said.
