Preparations are underway in Rome for the traditional Labour Day concert in Piazza San Giovanni on Sunday promoted by Italy's three main trades union confederations, CGIL, CISL and UIL. This year the mega concert starting at 4 pm local time will be presented by singer-songwriter and radio host Luca Barbarossa and radio and TV host Mariolina Simone under the slogan 'More value for work: negotiating employment pensions'. The musical line-up includes Skunk Anansie, Max Gazzè, Modena City Ramblers, Vinicio Capossela, Nada, Salmo, Marlene Kuntz, Tiromancino, Fabrizio Moro, Gianluca Grignani, Coez, Bugo, Tullio De Piscopo and Gary Dourdan feat among others. There will also be tributes to musicians who have died recently, including Prince, Gianmaria Testa and Remo Remotti.
"The May 1 concert is sensitive to what is going on," Barbarossa said.
The presenter has in the past taken the stage in a performing role and, while he says his contract "gags" him once he has introduced the singers, he cannot rule out "letting go". The musical performances will as always be interspersed with reflections from ordinary people on the theme of work, the environment, legality.
There will be no direct link-up with other Labour Day concerts taking place around the country, including the 'rival' event in Taranto. However the organisers of the Rome event Massimo Bonelli (I-Company) and Carlo Gavaudan (Ruvido Produzioni) say they are pleased there are so many concerts.
"There is no competition, we are in solidarity with the others," they said.
The concert will be broadcast live on RAI3 starting at 3 pm and on Radio RAI2.
