Italian soccer association FIGC
has been chosen by the International Football Association Board
(IFAB) to trial new video assistant referee (VAR) technology on
the pitch, ANSA sources said Thursday.
The trials are expected to start in September.
FIGC president Carlo Tavecchio has called a meeting with
Serie A and B league clubs and the national referees'
association on April 21 to pass on the necessary technical
information.
"We are among the leading supporters of the use of
technology on the field and we believe we have all the
requisites to make our contribution to this important trial,"
Tavecchio said.
The project presented to the federation contemplates an
initial 'offline' phase during the 2016/2017 season and a second
'live' phase, probably in 2017/2018.
