An Egyptian former police officer
told L'Espresso news magazine in an interview that his country's
government ordered Italian student Giulio Regeni killed,
according to interview excerpts out Thursday.
"It is impossible for the Cairo government to actually
cooperate with Italy (on the investigation) because the top
echelons of command are involved," said the former officer, who
has been living in the United States since 2008.
"(Egyptian President Abdel Fattah) el-Sisi may hand over an
officer," he said. "He would serve three years in some castle,
and then get promoted".
The article also cites witness testimony from survivors of
the "bunkers where al-Sisi's executioners carry out their
tortures".
"I'm surprised you've resisted this long," General Mohamed
Elfaham, who is in charge of the Al Aqrab prison south of Cairo,
is quoted as saying.
"This prison is made so that whoever comes in, either dies
or loses his mind".
