A Rome court on Tuesday ruled that
defendants in the co-called Mafia Capitale trial into alleged
criminal infiltration of lucrative city contracts are to remain
in custody for the duration of the proceedings.
The court upheld a request from the prosecution in its
ruling.
The measure concerns a total of 32 defendants including
those on trial for mafia association and others answering to
other charges such as corruption.
Some are in prison custody and others are under house
arrest.
They include former rightist terrorist and gangster Massimo
Carminati and head of leftwing cooperatives Salvatore Buzzi, who
are accused of heading up a criminal organization that muscled
in on a vast slew of city contracts, including in the housing
services and services for Roma and migrants sectors.
