A Rome judge on Thursday acquitted
four couples who became parents thanks to surrogate mothers in
Ukraine and allegedly faked their children's papers in order to
register them in Italy. The couples risked 5-15 years in prison
if found guilty. The court acquitted them on grounds there was
no case to answer. However two people were indicted for
allegedly "recruiting" Italian couples wanting children and
sending them to a clinic in Kiev. While surrogate motherhood is
banned in Italy, recent court decisions have not held Italians
responsible for becoming parents in this way abroad.
