The production and trafficking
of drugs "continue to be the biggest and mots innovative
criminal market in Europe," Europol director Rob Wainwright said
Tuesday, presenting a 2016 report on the EU drugs market
compiled by the European Monitoring Centre for Drugs and Drug
Addiction (EMCDDA) and Europol. "While it is linked to other
forms of crime and even to terrorism, drugs are the fundamental
threat for the EU's internal security". He said that
"transborder cooperation by security forces is essential to
reduce the scope and impact" of the phenomenon. The European
drugs market is worth "at least 24 billion euros a year" in
Europe, Home Affairs Commissioner Dimitris Avramopoulos said
Tuesday, also presenting the report. Not only is it one of the
most profitable activities of organised crime but it "can also
go to fund human trafficking and terrorism and undermine efforts
in international development," he said.
